For his historic solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2003, superstar pianist Lang Lang selected a deeply ambitious, wide-ranging program. The performance moves seamlessly from a classical first half featuring Robert Schumann and Joseph Haydn into a brilliant interpretation of contemporary Chinese composer Tan Dun, before culminating in Franz Liszt's notoriously demanding Don Juan Fantasy. Behind this astonishing virtuosity lies a complex, high-stakes human story. Drilled from early childhood by a fiercely determined father to become the greatest pianist in the world, Lang Lang's youth was defined by intense isolation and sacrifice. When he ultimately invites his father onto the Carnegie Hall stage for a closing duet on a traditional Chinese folk song, it marks the emotional closing of one chapter and the triumphant beginning of his own personal and artistic freedom. This captivating concert film looks back at a truly magical, career-defining recital. Alongside the performance, close musical companions, including conductor Christoph Eschenbach, composer Tan Dun, and legendary teacher Gary Graffman, reflect on the weight of perfection. Joined by rising piano stars Bruce Liu and Claire Huangci, as well as body language and audio experts, they analyse the unique physical and emotional energy that cemented Lang Lang as a global cultural icon.
