The phenomenal Japanese pianist Hiromi seamlessly matches fiery spontaneity, impeccable technique, and joyful communication in this stunning 75-minute concert film. Performing in the vast outdoor Roman amphitheater at the Jazz à Vienne festival, Hiromi exudes a warm, intimate energy that completely transforms the historic space. Leading her electronically-flecked quartet, Sonicwonder, she shares the stage with New York trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, bassist Hadrien Feraud, and drummer Gene Coye. Hiromi solos with palpable pleasure, throwing the physical energy of her entire body into keyboard runs that alternate between crystal clarity and devilish funk power. As she moves effortlessly between her acoustic piano and a pair of Nord keyboards, O’Farrill delivers open, crackling trumpet lines that spray fireflies into the night sky. Supported by a tight, structural rhythm section, Hiromi toys with retro synth-bass vamps and delicate acoustic flows, offering an exhilarating sonic journey."
