For lovers of classic Jamaican music, the legacy of Lee "Scratch" Perry looms large over every landmark album, from Heart of the Congos to King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown. Rainford Hugh Perry earned his famous nickname "Scratch" through his wild, groundbreaking dexterity behind the mixing console. Born in colonial Jamaica and steeped in Yoruba traditions, Perry trained under Coxsone Dodd before founding his legendary labels, Upsetter and Black Ark Studio, where he helped pioneer the sound of dub reggae. This rare live concert film captures the mischievous octogenarian on stage at the Philharmonie de Paris, backed by the solid European musicians of the Homegrownband. From Rasta symbolism to leaping theatrical gestures, the stage set is a vibrant ritual. Backed by tight brass, vintage keyboards, melodica, and heavy rhythmic loops, the band perfectly recreates the sonic codes of reggae's golden era. Ever the eccentric performer rather than a traditional vocalist, Perry delivers his signature "spoken-sung" poetry with undeniable charm and sharp impertinence. The setlist balances classic Bob Marley tracks he helped produce in his early career—including Punk Reggae Party, Crazy Baldhead, and Small Axe—with iconic original compositions like Curly Locks, Soul Fire, and War Ina Babylon. Balancing on the edge of theatrical drama and sheer creative madness, Perry gives a captivating, one-of-a-kind performance that proves his legendary spirit remains entirely undiminished.
