Virtuoso pianist Monty Alexander returns to his roots alongside his dynamic ensemble, the Harlem Kingston Express. Effortlessly gliding between calypso, mento, intricate reggae, and vibrant, Caribbean-infused jazz, Alexander displays a languorous yet razor-sharp technique that has defined his distinguished career. Born in Kingston in 1944 and refined in the United States, Alexander absorbed the influences of jazz titans like Nat King Cole, Wynton Kelly, and Horace Silver, earning early mentorship from Oscar Peterson. In this captivating live performance, he brings that formidable legacy to life, blending refined elegance with infectious, body-swaying rhythm. The rich repertoire weaves through reimagined classics and warm improvisations, opening and closing with soulful nods to Bob Marley—including “No Woman No Cry” and “Running Away.” Alexander also infuses the works of Thelonious Monk and Ahmad Jamal with vibrant island textures, pays homage to dub icons King Tubby and Augustus Pablo on melodica, and delivers a stunning, impressionistic interpretation of “Hurricane Come and Gone.” The result is a joyful, sophisticated celebration of Caribbean heritage, American jazz, and timeless swing.
